Carol Baillie Coast Guard
"I have to reflect back and be like, 'wow, I did something.' I did aid in the worst oil spill in history and that's something I should be proud of."
As the granddaughter of a WWII Navy Nurse Corps veteran, 27-year-old Carol Baillie has kept her grandmother's military legacy alive with her service in the Coast Guard. While in the military, Carol traveled the world assuming a leadership role assisting with some of the worst oil recovery operations in U.S. history, including the unprecedented 2010 Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill. Having previously considered herself unsuccessful in her first attempt at a college, Carol's real-life experience in the Coast Guard provided her with confidence to pursue an academic career in environmental science. Now a college student, Carol feels comfortable defining herself as an out lesbian and speaks of the pain she experienced hiding her identity under "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."
